Shoreline Protection Project Highlighted in the 2016 Land and Water Magazine

meng1Professors Chunyan Li and Shelley Meng of Louisiana State University studied the effect of Vegetated EcoShield™ on erosion protection of the berm constructed through a shoreline protection project at the Buras Boat Harbor.  A combination of lab experiments, aerial photography, and field measurements of the topography and waves were conducted over an 18 month period from July 2014 to December 2015. The aerial photos and LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) measurements showed a clear trend of the development of vegetation, suggesting deep rooted plants are growing successfully in the area. Wave tank experiments demonstrated that one layer of the matrix mat without any vegetation is effective in its ability to reduce wave heights by 40%. With multiple layers and the addition of vegetation, it is expected that the reduction would be even more significant.
