An example of meta-anthropological meta-photography, this picture of anthropologist Dr. Mary Jill Brody was taken by Tojolabal anthropologist Lic. Antonio Gómez Hernández during the festival for Santa Margarita de Antoquia in the town of Las Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico. Brody, wearing Tojolabal women’s clothing (except for the shoes) is photographing the drummers and flutist who are playing for the procession of the Saint to the church after the annual pilgrimage to surrounding Tojolabal villages. Representatives of these surrounding villages participate in the “entrance” of the Saint as she is returned to the church, carrying flags from their villages and flowers to decorate the church. Brody spent the summer in Las Margaritas documenting changes in the language as evidenced in the speech of the younger members of the community.
